I had my surgery for a hernia under Mr Monkhouse in May 2016. I met Mr M prior to the surgery and he explained the problem and what his recommendation was. Very clear to speak to and reassuring that all questions answered. An excellent manner and as you would expect - professional. On the day of surgery there was some waiting around but you may have to expect that depending on the complexity of the cases before you and these things cannot be rushed. Just ask if you want to know about any delays - take a book and read and be prepared to wait. I was consented on the day by one of the team who was very reassuring and answered the questions I would have had in his explanation and summary of what would happen to make sure I understood what I was going to have by way of surgery and which side it was on etc., The anaesthetist was very clear and reassuring and explained what would happen prior to going in his consenting before going for surgery and just prior to going into the Theatre. I did not see the surgeon after the surgery - and I did not expect to, surgeons tend to do their bit and go. I note Mr Monkhouse has seen patients following their surgery which is really good, but to be honest he has done his bit and that was that. I was given a drink and sandwich following surgery and was not allowed to leave until I had passed urine - that did take me some time. I had painkillers at home to use and was prescribed painkillers, but I did not find that I needed those and after three days on paracetamol I stopped taking them which was great. One of the things that is emphasised is not to do any lifting etc following surgery. I found that as I could move about easily. After four days I took it on myself to go for a long walk and carry some stuff. This was a big mistake on my part - although no damage was done to the site of surgery, I had put my recovery back by a week as I had to take it really easy and went back on painkillers to deal with my issues that were self inflicted. So follow the advice and although it may be hard, do not do anything involving exertion. A keen cyclist the helpful nurse at the pre-assessment advised I could go back on my bike when I was comfortable - three weeks was discussed. I was back on the bike and rolling along with the miles - I cycle about 5 - 10 miles a day during the week (Boris bike commuter). I returned to work within four weeks - pretty low grade admin desk stuff. Now, nearly a year down the line no problems what so ever. About two months after surgery all was settling down and I was so positive after getting annoyed with my body - after 52 years on the planet - that it had started to play up when I though it should have much more life in it and indeed the positive outcome of the surgery is really fantastic and lifted that depression that I felt prior to surgery. IF you have a hernia do not put off dealing with it and if you choose to have surgery under Mr Monkhouse's team you are making a very wise choice. Do read the other reviews, I did after the first consultation and I could not believe all the positive feedback he had - so do check that out. Final words - Thank you Mr Monkhouse and your team - a truly happy patient.

Mr Monkhouse removed my gallbladder, I found him to be very friendly & I felt at ease straight away, he was very professional, I had no problems at all after my surgery & at my follow up appointment he was very thorough & explained everything to me. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Monkhouse & I was very happy I choose him for my operation.

I first saw Mr Monkhouse last May after many years of living with reflux. Over the years I thought I had Bulimia Nervosa, Coeliac Disease as was continually being sick after eating and in middle of the night. I was also diagnosed with mild Sleep Apnoea which has now gone and I am sleeping better than I have in years. Mr Monkhouse did a 24 hour oesophageal study to see how bad my reflux was, on getting the results he explained that I was an excellent candidate to have Nissan fundoplication surgery. I was a little scared but went ahead as Mr Monkhouse completely put me at ease, explaining everything in detail and answering all of my questions. The surgery went ahead in January 2017 and I am now 6 weeks post operative and I can honestly say I have never felt more healthy. I no longer have reflux, have lost weight and I feel like a new woman. I have such high regard for Mr Monkhouse, his skill, politeness, warmth are second to none. Thank you so much for giving me a new lease of life after so long.

I felt very comfortable with Mr Monkhouse, right from the initial consultation. My operation was scheduled as urgent. I was very fortunate and had my surgery within 8 weeks of the initial appointment. I cannot fault Mr Monkhouse although I had only seen him once he remembered me on the day of the surgery. Mr Monkhouse came to see me after the surgery in the recovery room and explained what they had done. The after care from Mr Monkhouse was 1st class it was the Christmas period and he took the time to email me everyday until i began to feel better. Myself and my family thought this was excellent. If i were to have more surgery with Mr Monkhouse I would know I would be in very safe hands. Mr Monkhouse does an excellent job at making people feel at ease. I cannot thank him enough.
